3 Common Signs of Atlanta Wind Damage

6/22/2020 (Permalink)

It's important to have your home inspected after a storm passes through your neighborhood

How the professional spot wind damage to your home

We have seen unresolved wind damage cause more significant problems to our metro Atlanta homes. When heavy winds pass through Atlanta, the damage may affect your home or business gutters and roofing. These minor damages can become much bigger problems if not handled quickly. At SERVPRO of South Cobb, we have seen massive water damage from damaged gutters or roofing.

3 Common Signs of Wind Damage

  1. Missing or loose pieces of roofing materials. Check on the sides of your house and see if your roof has had shingles fly off after fast winds.
  2. Missing bricks or siding. When siding is damaged, your home is not set up o fight against potential water damages.
  3. A broken window or window seal can cause substantial damage to your home's interior if not correctly fixed.

Suspect that your home has been affected by wind damage?

If your Atlanta home has apparent wind damage, it is essential to get your roof/property inspected by a licensed contractor. SERVPRO of South Cobb is licensed and insured, and if you do have wind damage to your home, we can tell you the proper steps on getting the missing materials replaced. In most cases, but not all, we recommend that you contact your insurance company to cover the loss. For documentation reasons, we tell our Atlanta residents always to keep a detailed record when something happens to your property. Include the date, time, weather information, and the damage in your documents. Keeping an accurate record is going to be helpful for insurance claims.

Repairing Atlanta Homes after wind damage

Repairing damage to your home is pretty easy in most cases. The issue that we have seen is that many homeowners do not think it is a big deal to get the damaged materials replaced, causing more significant problems. In one scenario, we had a customer that told us that they knew that fast finds had caused damage to their roof because they found missing shingles in their yard. After a few months of neglect, the homeowner began to smell mold coming from their attic. When one of our IICRC trained professionals inspected the attic, we found mold that had developed from a leak in their roof. A dark, moist place, like an attic, is a friendly place for mold growth

A quick fix is not going to take place when wind damage is more extensive, like from a tornado. Although tornadoes are not common in Atlanta, that last one occurring in 2008, we need to ensure that you are aware that extensive restoration protocols required to take place. Atlanta tornadoes can cause water damage, roof damage, chimney damage, and multiple other forms of damage to your home that can complicate the repair process.
